So long, Picnik.

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. That is to have succeeded. ”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Naming the Centuries

  • 7 year old: We live in the 20th century.
  • Mum: No, it's the 21st century now.
  • 7: But the year is 2010, so it's 20th, just like when you were little it was the 1970s. The 19th.
  • Mum: No, remember that the 1st century started at zero, so when you hit 2000, it was the start of 21st century. So, we say something happened in the 1900s, but that's the 20th century. You know some history dates. When did the Battle of Hastings happen?
  • 7: That was in 1066!
  • Mum: So, the 11th century. But I wonder what they called it back then? The 10 hundreds? or the 1000s?
  • 7: I think they called it "now".
